| Summary: | The previous catalogue sheet indicates that there is a published reference to HMS Renown, Sydney Harbour (14910) in the Arthur Streeton catalogue, Osboldstone & Co. Pty. Ltd. Melbourne, 1935 (774). However, further research indicates that (774), Arrival of H.R.H. Prince of Wales on 'Renown', Sydney and (775), Study - Arrival of 'Renown', painted on the spot was made in 1921. Our painting is dated 1922 and therefore cannot be either of these works. The reproduction of (774) on page 53 of the catalogue confirms this. The Arthur Streeton catalogue indicates that (774) was destroyed en route for exhibition at R.A. and it is therefore sensible to assume that our painting was done to replace it. HMS Renown, Sydney Harbour (14910) shows the ship anchored in the Athol Bight having brought the Prince of Wales to Australia. It was painted from the North Shore and shows the Domain, Elizabeth Bay and Garden Island in the background. Although the work is not directly related to the war, it was thought that'...there was some connection between the Prince of Wales' visit and the war that preceeded it [and] that a good painting by Streeton of a Naval subject would add to the interest of the pictures...exhibited in the Naval gallery'. Depicts Royal Navy battlecruiser, anchored in Athol Bight, Sydney Harbour, during HRH Prince of Wales' (later King Edward VII) tour; Elizabeth Bay and Garden Island in background. | ||
