| Summary: | Figure of a young man asleep on his bed in the communal tent at Diego Garcia. 'This is one of the men's corners in a communal tent in Diego Garcia. The young man is a mechanic for the F18 Hornets and had been on night duty. I was able to work on him in his makeshift environment whilst he slept through the day. Little moments in the image struck me as poignant: the teddy bear, a parting gift from his wife; the photographs of his wife and dog along with the pin-up posters. Hanging on the locker was his uniform which he will wear again that night when he goes back on duty'. Peter Churcher, interview with Betty Snowden, April 2002. Peter Churcher was appointed official artist in January 2002 to record Australia's involvement in the International Coalition against Terrorism. He travelled to the Middle East and spent three weeks with the RAN on board HMAS Kanimbla and Adeliade in the Persian Gulf. Leaving the Middle East, Churcher spent time on Diego Garcia, a US military base in the Indian Ocean with the RAAF. In September 2002 he completed his commission in Afghanistan, recording the activities of the SAS at Bagram.   | ||
