Physical description: Ferrous Metal; Wood; Standard pattern wooden alarm rattle used by Air Raid and Civil Defence personnel and mainly manufactured from a dark brown hardwood timber which is nailed and screwed. The rear closing panel is the only piece made from three-ply. It has been impressed with a checker's stamp which employs the broad arrow and the numeral 1114, and is stamped MO 1943 MK III.
Summary: Unknown. Item reaccessioned. This style of rattle was most commonly issued to Air Raid and Civil Defence Wardens to warn the residents of their area of potential air raids or gas attacks. The very loud, sharp clacking sound made by the rattle was designed to attract attention.
