Description
View of Afion Kara Hissar which was the principal concentration camp of Australian prisoners of war in Turkey. Situated at the junction of Constantinople, Baghdad and Smyrna (Izmir) railway at an altitude of 3000 feet and 200 miles from the sea, it was a secure and comparatively healthy spot, the summer being pleasantly cool but the winter very severe. It derives its name Afion (opium) for the production of which large numbers of poppies are grown in the vicinity and Kara Hissan (black tower) from the rock in the background, which is surrounded by an ancient Byzantine castle.
