| Summary: | Major General Sir William Throsby Bridges, KCB, CMG, at the outbreak of war in 1914, Bridges was selected to raise and command the force for overseas service, which won renown as the "Australian Imperial Forces" - the name suggested by Bridges. On 15 May, 1915 General Bridges was mortally wounded by a Turkish sniper while inspecting positions in Monash Valley, Gallipoli. His body was returned to Australia and interred on Mount Pleasane, overlooking Duntroon. He was the only Australian soldier of World War 1 so honoured, his charger, "Sandy" was also the only horse to return from active service. The KCM given to Bridges was the first knighthood of the Australian armed services. | ||
