Summary: Group portrait of officers of the Bushveldt Carbineers some wearing mourning arm bands marking the death of Queen Victoria. Identified from left ot right: Lieutenant (Lt) Peter Joseph Handcock; Lt Henry 'Harry' Harbord Morant; either Dr Johnston or Dr Neel; Captain (Capt) Frederick Hunt; Capt Alfred Taylor, and Lt Harry Picton. The death and mutilation of Capt Hunt in August 1901 devastated Lt Morant and culminated in he and Lt Handcock killing Boer prisoners. Lts Morant and Handcock were tried on five charges of murder and received two sentences of death.They were shot by a firing party on the morning of 27 February 1902. Their bodies were placed into the same grave in a quiet civilian section of Pretoria's Church Street Cemetery. Original photograph held in Private Records Collection PR82/120.
