Summary: Western Sahara. 1991-12. Gunner James Carmody, radio operator, of Enoggera, Qld, and Greensborough, Vic and Signalman James West, radio operator, of Yarraman, Qld, and Redcliffe, Qld, at Awsard with minefields behind them. They are members of a 40-man Australian Army contingent (mostly from the 1st Signals Regiment) with the United Nations peacekeeping force in Western Sahara (MINURSO), providing communications for 3,000 UN peacekeeping soldiers from thirty countries, monitoring a ceasefire and organising a referendum to give the people a choice between independence or integration with neighbouring Morocco.
