| Summary: | View from one of the front-line posts established by the 1st Division in pushing forward east of Hazebrouck. In front is Lieutenant L. G. Riches MC of the 11th Battalion sitting on a German field gun abandoned in no man's land, which was bombed with rifle grenades a few minutes later. A German outpost was 150 yards away. About this time in 1918 the Australian infantry began to corrode the enemy's line by a series of extraordinarily successful raids. From posts such as this small parties of all brigades constantly raided the posts opposed to them. In the foreground is the opening of a communication sap previously used by the enemy. | ||
