| Summary: | Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) John Rupert Balfe of Brunswick, Victoria. At the outbreak of war he was a medical student at Melbourne University (MU) and had served four years with the MU Rifles rising to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He applied for and was granted a commission in the 6th Battalion AIF on 24 August 1914 and embarked at Melbourne on HMAT Hororata on 19 October 1914. Lt Balfe was killed by a shell burst shortly after landing at Gallipoli in the early morning of 25 April 1915 and was buried at Shrapnel Gully. He was 25 years of age. | ||
