| Summary: | Three "fit" workers at Shimo Sonkurai No 1 Camp, standing outside the camp hospital. Standing from left to right: NX4417 Bruce Pearce, NX47506 Oscar Jackson, both of 2/30th Battalion, and unidentified. The prisoner at right is unable to fasten his shorts because his stomach is swollen with beriberi. The photograph was taken by NX37745 Private George Aspinall, 2/30 Australian Infantry Battalion. With a folding Kodak 2 camera, Aspinall secretly photographed his internment at the Changi prisoner-of-war camp and on the Burma-Thailand Railway. Aspinall was one of many prisoners engaged in photography at Changi. He later recalled that a number of photographic studios emerged throughout the camp, including one operated by a Japanese agent. | ||
