| Summary: | Refugees, holding babies in their arms, recently returned to the burnt-out remains of their homes, look on as more nearby buildings go up in flames. Members of anti-independence militias burned many buildings in Dili as they left the city, following the arrival of the Australian led International Force for East Timor (INTERFET). The militia had been responsible for a wave of killings, arson and intimidation, following the East Timorese vote for independence on 30 August 1999. | ||
