| Summary: | Soldiers in the laneway behind the temporary Headquarters of the Australian Chemical Warfare Research and Experimental Section, later to be known as the 1st Field Trials Company, Royal Australian Engineers (RAE). Pending the completion of the Proserpine Chemical Warfare Station, the temporary site consisted of five raised timber houses left vacant after Italian farmers were interned by the Australian Government. It was on the east side of Innisfail with the Johnstone River on one side and cane fields and rainforest on the other. By 1944 there were 57 staff including cooks and support staff, and 22 women’s service representatives as laboratory assistants and administrators. Volunteers for the trials and experiments came from a variety of units located in North Queensland and stayed for short periods. They each swore an oath of secrecy as did all official and civil members involved with the trials. | ||
