Summary: The main part of this collection comprises of Private Simpson's letters to his mother. The letters contain details of Simpson's training at the No 3 Signalling School and service with the 9th Battalion in Europe. Private Simpson was wounded three times while on active service. While on leave, recovering from his wounds Simpson visited Ireland twice. The details of these visits and Simpson's view of the political upheavals in Ireland at that time are described in his letters home. The collection also includes the condolence cards and letters of sympathy received by Simpson's mother when he died of pnuemonia and influenza in November 1918. One of these letters, from the nurse who cared for Simpson when he was ill contains a lock of his hair. Other material in the collection includes a number of letters between Simpson's mother and an Irish nurse who knew Simpson well, Simpson's pay book and papers relating to his investment in the Seventh War Loan.
